How to Measure for a Ladies’ Kilt

Ladies’ kilts may sit at the natural waist or slightly lower depending on the style. Check the product description, then take your waist, hip and desired kilt-length measurements carefully.

Before Taking Your Measurements

Stand naturally with your feet together and wear light clothing. Keep the tape level around the body and do not pull it too tightly.

Natural Waist

Measure around the narrowest part of your waist. Keep the measuring tape level and comfortably fitted.

Hips

Measure around the fullest part of your hips and seat. Keep your feet together and make sure the tape remains level.

Kilt Length

Measure from the point where you want the kilt to sit down to your preferred finishing length.

Fit Position

Confirm whether the selected kilt is designed to sit at the natural waist, mid-rise or lower waist before submitting your measurements.

Do Not Use Your Jeans Size

Women’s trousers and jeans may sit lower than a traditional or high-waisted kilt. Always take a fresh body measurement for the product you are ordering.

Choose Your Preferred Kilt Length

Use these positions as general guidance. Always measure from the exact point where you want the kilt waistband to sit.

Traditional Length

Normally finishes around the middle of the knee.

Modern Length

Normally finishes slightly above the knee.

Long Length

Normally finishes below the knee.

Before You Begin

Measuring Tips

Follow these simple tips before taking your measurements to achieve a more accurate and comfortable fit.

Use a Flexible Tape

Use a soft tailor’s measuring tape rather than a rigid or metal construction tape.

Measure Your Body

Do not measure an existing jacket or kilt unless the product instructions specifically request garment measurements.

Keep the Tape Comfortable

Keep the tape close to your body without pulling it too tightly or leaving unnecessary space.

Ask for Assistance

For the most accurate result, ask another person to take and confirm your measurements.

Sizing Questions

Size Guide FAQs

Find answers to common questions about kilt sizing, body measurements and selecting the correct fit.

Where should a traditional kilt sit?

A traditional kilt should sit around your natural waist, normally higher than where modern jeans or low-rise trousers are worn.

Should I use my jeans waist size?

No. Jeans often sit lower on the body. Measure around your natural waist using a flexible measuring tape and follow the instructions shown in this guide.

How long should my kilt be?

A traditional kilt normally finishes around the middle of the kneecap. Measure from your natural waist down to the desired finishing point.

What should I do if I am between sizes?

Selecting the next size up is normally recommended for additional comfort, especially when ordering a jacket that will be worn over a waistcoat.

Are these body measurements or garment measurements?

The measurements shown in the size chart are body measurements unless the relevant product page specifically states otherwise.

Should someone else take my measurements?

Yes. Asking another person to measure you usually produces a more accurate result, particularly for jacket length, kilt length and chest measurements.

Can I send my measurements after placing an order?

Send or confirm your measurements as soon as possible. Include your order number so the team can locate your order before production or fulfilment begins.

Can the Kilts Store team help me select a size?

Yes. Contact the team with your chest, natural waist, height, preferred kilt length and the product you would like to purchase.
